Lyrics

I got home from the War, November 1945.
To find my baby had taken a lover, the proof she couldn't hide.
Was right there in her stomach, she was carrying another man's child.
She said the letter said I was missing, they thought that I had died,
So she took to drinking heavy, and going out at night.

Her face I'd see every day break, all that got me through
The mud and blood and horror- will this be my last day?
But now the Gods desert me, and I'm left here with this bottle,
And one last horror, she screams another man's name.

So I left my hometown, and moved around a lot,
I took work where I could find it, but never stuck at much for long.
Because my mind would start to wander, my nerves were all shot,
So I took to drinking heavy, until I forgot.

Her face I'd see every day break, all that got me through
The mud and blood and horror- will this be my last day?
But now the Gods desert me, and I'm left here with this bottle,
And one last horror, she screams another man's name.

I went back to my hometown, November 1969,
Went on past the old house, I don't know what I thought I'd find.
But right there on the front lawn, I saw her crying goodbye,
To a strapping young man in uniform- he was going off to fight.

And is it her face he'll see every day break, all that gets him through
The mud and blood and horror- will this be his last day?
Will the Gods desert him, and will he catch a bullet,
One last horror, his mother screams his name.
